Citrus fruits were introduced into the Mediterranean by the Arabs in 1150 A.D. Sicily, which covers an area of 25,460 km² (175,000 hectares of these are citrus groves), is currently the world’s first producer of Pigmented Oranges and the second of Lemons. It also produces the best qualities of Mandarins, Clementines and Bitter Oranges. Its geographical position and temperate climate facilitate the production of these citrus fruits that are highly desirable for their organoleptic characteristics.
